Our History

The Marmion Abbey Farm has a history of reinventing itself. In 1949, with the purchase of two pieces of property that now make up the Abbey, Academy, and farm complex, the farm was officially started. During the early years Fr. Matthias Zinkan, assisted by laymen and the monastery brothers, did not grow pine trees but instead grew crops such as corn, soy-beans, and alfalfa, as well as raising dairy cows.

In 1957 that all changed with the introduction of a new Government program called the Soil Bank. The program would pay farmers on a monthly basis not to grow crops and to let the soil either go back to grass or to plant trees that would be provided. Marmion Abbey decided to take up the government's offer and we haven’t looked back since
.
Over the years the farm has played a key role with Marmion Academy and Marmion Abbey. The successful business of selling Christmas Trees has enabled the Monks of Marmion Abbey to continue their ministries throughout our community and grow the San Jose Priory in Guatemala. The farm has also been, and will continue to be, an educational resource for the young men of Marmion Academy. Through a close partnership the farm teaches the students of Marmion Academy about stewardship of land and the ecology of running a tree farm.
Today the farm is once again reinventing itself into Abbey Farms. Beginning in 2009 we are adding a pumpkin patch, a unique corn maze and expansion of existing farm operations to include Landscape Trees. We are also enriching the experience of our traditional cut-your-own Christmas Tree event. Our goal is to develop Abbey Farms into a multi-season service organization centered around family and good ol’ fashioned outdoor fun! http://www.marmion.orghttp://marmion.org/Abbey/priory.htmlhttp://www.marmion.orghttp://www.comcast.netshapeimage_13_link_0shapeimage_13_link_1shapeimage_13_link_2
