The Monks of Marmion Abbey

Abbey Farms is more than a destination for family fun, fresh produce, Christmas trees or weddings. Its underlying mission is to support the monks of Marmion Abbey. The revenue generated allows the monks to carry out their work throughout the local community. It also supports activities with the San José Priory and Seminary in Quetzaltenango, Guatemala.

Marmion Abbey was named in honor of Blessed Columba Marmion OSB (1858-1923). He was renowned for his heroic virtue, sanctity of life and spiritual writings.

In 1933, the Bishop of Rockford invited the Benedictine monks of St. Meinrad Abbey in southern Indiana to Aurora. His hope was that they’d administer the former Fox Valley Catholic High School for Boys on Lake Street in Aurora. They agreed, taking on this mission. The school became Marmion Academy, which eventually moved to its current Butterfield Road location.

On March 21, 1947, the diocese elevated Marmion from a dependent Priory of St. Meinrad to an independent Abbey. Marmion Abbey continues to conduct Marmion Academy, a college preparatory high school for 510 boys. It also manages the San José Priory and Seminary in Quetzaltenango, Guatemala, Central America.

Locally, Marmion Abbey furnishes pastors for Annunciation Parish and St. George Byzantine Romanian Catholic Parish in Aurora. They also give extensive pastoral assistance for other parishes within the Rockford and Joliet Dioceses. For more information about the Abbey, please visit the Marmion Abbey website.
